Guest Designer ~ Nicole Vögeli

Hi there!

It’s me, Nicole, with my second guest design blog post for you. I hope you liked my first one with the no-line coloring technique (You can check that out HERE). Today, it’s all about masking!

First, I planned how the balloons from the Balloon Numbers set should be arranged on my card. I wanted the numbers to be in the front, so I had to stamp them first, as well as the round balloon. I could have gone with only three balloons but I felt like a group of five would create a more interesting focal point and allow me to use a rainbow color palette.

After stamping the first three balloons, I stamped them again on some masking paper, cut them out and temporarily cover up the numbers and the round balloon on my panel. That way, I was able to stamp the heart and the star balloon on top to create a look of dimension. After this step, I stamped the bunny from the Elephant Parade set and removed the masks. I used alcohol markers to color my images.

I used an alcohol marker friendly marker and a ruler to draw the strings from the balloons to the bunny’s paw. The sentiment is also from the Balloon Numbers set and I love how you can send this card to everyone who is older than 29. 🙂

Tip: If you’re using the masking technique, make sure you stamp first, what you want to be in the front.

I wanted a soft and simple background behind the colorful balloons so I created my own cloud stencil to do some ink blending. I cut some scalloped shapes from some masking paper to create this cloudy background. I could have masked off the bunny and the balloons for this step, but I was a little lazy and just left a halo around them while carefully using my blending tool not too close to them.

The finished card looked a little lost, so I added washi tape on the sides to create some kind of frame. And for the finishing touch, I added white sequins for a bit of interest.

I hope you got inspired to use the masking technique and mix and match your SPD products.

Thanks a lot for stopping by!

Have a colorful day,

Nicole
