PIECE OF CAKE
Piece of Cake is a sweet treat box that’s perfect for any occasion that calls for cake! With over a dozen cake decorating elements – you’ll have everything you need to decorate the perfect slice of cake. This fun and easy to assemble box will also create an entire 10 slice cake. The multiple flap design on the box allows you two methods for opening – either from the back or the top.
I’ve whipped up two fun slices of Strawberry Shortcake for you today. One created from cardstock and the other from felt. The SugarCut – Piece of Cake box design is very simple to assemble and I thought it would be fun to see if I could create a simple NO SEW “plushy” version using just felt.
Creating both the cardstock and felt box started out exactly the same, by cutting the base portion of the die design twice to assemble a complete box. Before you adhere your two cut pieces, you’ll cut way the side or the back flap on one of the die cut pieces depending on how you want your box to open – from either the back or from the top. (My box opens from the back so I cut away the back flap from one of the cut pieces.)
Since I wanted my No-Sew “plushy” to still maintain the angular edges that a slice of cake has, I needed to do two things to create those sharp edges.
First, the score lines are clearly visible on the felt after cutting so I used an iron (medium heat/no steam) to create a crease in the felt along all of the score lines. Secondly, I created the box base structure once again but this time using light-weight 28 lb. copier paper. Since the felt box was basically a floppy shell, I needed the paper box so that I could slip it inside the felt “shell” while I glued the flaps (except the back closure flap) into place. This paper box helped the felt to maintaining the correct shape while the glue set. After the glue was dry, I removed and discarded the paper box and filled the felt box with poly-fil stuffing. Once filled, I closed the box and glued the back flap into place. The icing shaped box topper also helps the “plushy” maintain it’s shape.
After both boxes had been assembled, decorating was a piece of cake (pun intended 😉 ) by using just a few of the many decorating design elements in this die. I added a few “daisies” using a flower and leaf die from the SugarCut – Floral Pocket Tag die set.
Be sure to hop over to our YouTube Channel where you’ll find a video from Kara on assembling and decorating the SugarCut – Piece of Cake treat box.
