Today we have Cathy stopping by for a chat and with a look at how she creates! The Inlaid technique is all the rage right now, and Cathy will be giving us a peek at one of the ways you can achieve this look with your dies.
Blessed. I’m in a good place personally, spiritually, and professionally. My children and grandchildren all live nearby now that my son and his family moved back to MN last August and it’s been wonderful for all of us.
I’m Wishing..
I was more organized. My craft room is a constant mess. I feel so peaceful when it is clean, but just like dishes or laundry, it doesn’t stay that way for long – so I usually work in a small spot alongside annoying clutter!
I’m Loving…
All of the sleepovers I’ve had with my grandkids lately. My husband and I just had five of them for an overnight visit. We played “school”, ate pizza and homemade ice cream, watched the movie Spy Kids, and then off to bed – followed by more playing and a huge breakfast prepared by Papa. I’m not sure which fills my heart more – the little kids filling our house or the fact that my adult children are out together for the evening!!
I’m Creating…
Cards for the three design teams I am currently on. I love it because being in my craft room is constructive down time after a day at work. That kind of creativity replenishes my energy.
I’m Reading…
Boys On the Boat by Daniel James Brown
I’m Watching…
Downtown Abbey and State of Affairs
I have had so much fun with the Inlaid or Embedded Die Cut technique I thought I would share a tutorial with some of the SugarCuts dies to entice you to give it a try!
This is where the fun begins! Sometimes using this technique is mental workout – almost like creating a jigsaw puzzle, so I spend time planning the layers and mentally walking through the steps I need to take. I’ll be using the SugarCuts – Gift Tag SugarCuts Die later in the design. Having the die cut handy helps me visualize the card.
The SugarCuts Heart Journal Card Die is the first one I’m using. It is cut into the main background paper. (Sometimes I attach my work to a scrap of copy paper – which can make it easier to mount the inlaid layer to the card back. You’ll see in a couple of steps that I didn’t need to do that in this case.)
I used the same die again to cut a section out of my numbered border paper. The SugarCuts – Heart Journal Card die cut is resting in place and is ready for the next step.
It’s time to use the SugarCuts – Gift Tag Die to create a spot for my cute zombie tag. Washi tape holds the die in place so it doesn’t shift as it goes through my Cuttlebug.
Here’s where you get a picture of the jigsaw puzzle! Watch out for any little pieces of die cuts (especially if your are using a word) – I will need all three pieces of the blue patterned paper.
Time to adhere the blue pattern paper into the puzzle.
Next comes the zombie tag – and the center of its die cut circle. (If you look closely, you can see I wasn’t as exact as I could have been putting it in place. But, we all know when the whole card is together no one will really notice that small detail.)
I hope I’ve inspired you to give the Inlaid Technique a try. It gives a different look to die cuts on your cards and if you are someone who likes puttering around, it’s very satisfying when you are finished.
All the best! Cathy

January 28, 2015 at 9:28 amFun stuff! Love learning more about the inlaid die technique! I too feel that my paper crafting re-energizes me after a day of work. I have a very small work space and it is so much nicer when it is organized. I don’t know how to keep it that way though! So glad that your children/grandchildren are in MN with you! I am a MN girl too:)

January 28, 2015 at 8:46 pmGreat tutorial, Cathy! You know I love the inlaid technique too, and you did a great job demonstrating it! What a fun card, with your signature lovely-papers-combining-to-make-a-pleasing-result, and that fabulous sentiment!
