Yay, It’s Your Birthday {Chunky Monkey}

Hi there, Nicole here.

What do you do with leftover backgrounds or pre-colored stamped images? I try to keep them as organized as possible but let’s be honest, I still tend to forget to use them. So I challenged myself to use some pretty but forgotten leftovers for today’s card.

I had colored this adorable monkey using alcohol markers and colored pencils a while ago but never found a home for him on a card. I just couldn’t find a color combo I liked that went well with this deep pink on the balloon.

Some days ago, I made a few striped backgrounds for an upcoming release card and had this leftover grey and white background piece laying on my table. It’s a piece of watercolor paper that came on a ring binder and it’s just some Distress Ink that had been spritzed with water before stamping. Again, I had no idea how to use it.

I recently bought the Sugar and Spice paper pad and fell in love with the color combo. So when I was looking through my stash for things to go along with my monkey, I realized, that the pink from the balloon is very similar to the one from the paper pad. I totally got inspired by the papers colors and paired my grey striped background with the (neutral brown) monkey and his pink balloon. I also used a piece of pink polka dotted paper to add more pink to my card. I felt like something was missing and so I took another look at the paper pad. I loved the soft blue (almost teal) color a lot and added tiny die cut accents in this color to my card.

TIP: If you struggle finding a color combo, have a look at your paper pads, color inspiration charts (e.g. on Pinterest) or cards from other crafters.

So I cut down my background piece and glued it to my panel. Then, I die cut the dotted banner and the tiny accents. I heat embossed a sentiment on some heavyweight vellum and cut it to size. I adhered the dotted banner to my background using foam tape and used double sided tape to add the vellum sentiment to the banner. I stamped the little Yay! and glued down the tiny accents with liquid glue. To finish up my card, I added clear sparkly sequins.

Do you have pretty leftovers on your desk that are just waiting to get a home on a card? Check out what’s lying around, maybe there’s a super fun combo just in front of your nose 🙂

Thanks a lot for stopping by!

Have a happy day,

Nicole
